Lavau-sur-Loire

In the past, Lavau sur Loire harbour had an important economic activity which enabled a population of fishermen and sailors to settle and prosper there. Various products were transported via the Loire River, for instance wood and the famous blue granite coming from the Garenne, which was used for construction in Saint Nazaire shipyards and for cobbling some streets in Nantes. Since the quarries closed in 1980, they have been converted into a fishing and leisure park called “trou bleu” – “blue hole”. Strollers appreciate Lavau sur Loire for the quietness of its little roads, the charm of its harbour and the beauty of its church, dating back to the 12th century and which was rebuilt in 1994, after having been struck by lightning and completely burnt down.
