Delta d’estuaire

Alongside Estuaire 2009 and its perennial and semi-perennial installations, Delta seeks to investigate the multiple aspects of the estuary through a series of micro events.

From a geographer’s lecture on the economic issues regarding the restoration of the landscape, through a river performance where two artists on a canoe try to spell out a song using marine signs (Julien Bismuth & Jean-Pascal Flavien), Delta of the estuary goes against the current: a man walks on an ice floe, followed by an icebreaker (Guido van de Werve), a frail Australian boat drifts at night in the midst of elvers (A constructed world) whilst the Point of View Museum invites you to take a festive look at the river Loire.

Melanie Rio gallery
POLARITY

For the first collective exhibition at the Melanie Rio Gallery, 4 artists offer a fresh take on Estuaire. For the event, the photographer Edgar Martins, the sculptor Kim Byuong and the duo Tony Chauvin / Laurent Chomette have produced unique pieces. Through their production, they attempt to alter our fragmented perception of space, defined by its polarity, hence changing our understanding of the estuary’s territory.
Based in a 19th century town house, the Melanie Rio Gallery is dedicated to contemporary art, with three exhibition spaces, a bookshop and a 1200 m2 garden.

1 500 pupils on the estuary !
For Estuaire 2009, pupils from about 40 different schools (primary and secondary schools) have taken part to the pedagogical syllabus of the event. In collaboration with the association Estuarium, this project helped teachers and pupils to understand the creative process of some of the artists, and to learn about the local landscape… More than 40 different projects have been developed and June will be the month where pupils and teachers will be given the opportunity to put an exciting end to a year of work.

This project is supported by l’Académie de Nantes, le Plan Loire Grandeur Nature and the DRAC des Pays de la Loire.

The ecological loo experience…

Last summer, Estuaire asked the École Supérieure du Bois to design ecological toilets, also called dry toilets. Quickly, they associated with students from Nantes’ School of Architecture to conceive and produce two prototypes, named “Tiny semicolon” and “Periscope “. Come and see these new, playful and uncommon conveniences on the Carnet’s site !

Work produced thanks to the support of Kazuba, Dry toilets system.

Block architects
/ “Block banks”

From Nantes to Saint-Nazaire, public benches nearby the artworks

Block was asked to produce a public bench out of recycled Tetra Pak bricks; Tetra Pak partners the event, underlining a common goal: an awareness campaign about the recycling of the food brick.

Founded in 2000 in Nantes, Block’s work is resolutly experimental. Their practice is a cross-section of different artistic disciplines, recycling either sound, installation, performance or architecture. In designing their benches, they were strongly influenced by their urban environment, more precisely the skateboard’ banks.

The idea was therefore not to create a new object, a new public furniture, but to customise a shape, an object already belonging to public spaces. The Block Banks are adjustable according to the number of assembled units, the main unit measuring 30 cm wide and being the equivalent of 5000 recycled bricks.
